1939年11月17日，德国法西斯匪徒，侵入捷克斯洛伐克屠杀了布拉格大学9名学生和2名教授，同时其他名校的男女学生也遭到了机枪的扫射、殴打和监禁。

为了在大学生中倡导追求和平、民主、自由和进步，为了控诉暴徒血腥的罪恶行径，纪念反法西斯的大学生运动，1946年，来自世界各国的学生代表将每年11月17日定为世界学生日，又称国际学生日、世界大学生节。
