South China's Hainan Province has been hit with its worst rainstorm in half a century. President Hu Jintao is urging officials to perform timely evacuations撤离 and rescue efforts for people affected in the region.

.

More than two-hundred rescuers have been working to transfer three-hundred residents.

In the city of Wanning, more than 100-thousand people were trapped by floods. Thousands of rescuers are searching for them.

Wei Liucheng, Secretary of CPC Hainan Provincial Committee, said, "We will focus on helping people resume [riˈzju:m]恢复 their normal life and rebuild their homes. The provincial government will provide funds, and the civil department will provide relief materials. We will arrange for their lives after the disaster."

Infrastructure基础设施 repairs are also underway在进行中.

The Ministry of Treasury and Civil Affairs allocated 50-million yuan to help the situation in the region.

Forecasts predict the rain to stop next Monday. Experts say the heavy rainstorm is mainly a result of the rare combination of low atmospheric [ˌætməˈsferɪk, -ˈsfɪə-]大气的 pressure and cold air.
