Large numbers of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Paris after the government narrowly survived a no confidence vote over its controversial pensions reform.

The vote was much closer than expected, just nine short of the number needed to bring down the government.

Bernadette Keil reports.

The outcome of the parliamentary vote prompted immediate anti-government protests in the center of Paris with demonstrators setting fire to bins and clashing with police who used tear gas to clear some areas.

More than 100 people were arrested in tent standoffs with security forces.

The parliamentary vote was called by opposition parties after president Macron's administration decided to force through a rise in the pension age by 2 years last week without parliamentary approval.

UN climate scientists have warned that far more needs to be done to tackle global warming with the key target of limiting temperature rises likely to be missed within a decade.

But the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said the future was still humanities' to shape.

Hangyp Sing from Climate Action Network, which represents organizations in more than 130 countries says the global response to other crises shows it can be done.

Venezuela's oil minister Tareck el Aissami has resigned following the arrests of several executives of the state oil firm firm in connection with corruption allegations.

The resignation follows the arrest of a mayor, two judges and several government officials as part of an anti-corruption purged by President Nicolas Maduro.

A Russian-backed official said the town had come under attack from a drone.
